We have over 30 doulas on the team here at Discover Birth! Each week we’re introducing you to a different member of the team, so you can better understand their interests inside and outside of birthwork. This time it’s Andrea Paul! Andrea has been a longstanding member of the team. In addition to being a doula, Andrea also leads our team by managing our doula schedules and connecting clients with the right doula for them. It’s a key role for Discover Birth and we’re so thankful to have her. She was nice enough to answer a few questions below 🙂

What has been the best part of being a doula the last year?

The best part has been experiencing such a variety in birth experiences! I’ve had the opportunity to support 40 births this year and with each birth you learn something different. It keeps me on my toes and is also exciting.

What is your favourite movie and why?

I would have to say The Wizard of Oz. Ever since childhood there was something magical about this movie. I also love the music and singing along. I have always had a pair of Ruby slippers and a collection of different movie memorabilia.

Most used item in your doula bag?

For my birth bag it would have to be my TENS machine. Client love how effective it is! For my postpartum bag it would be my Joeyband for baby snuggles at night.

If you weren’t working in birthwork what do you think you’d be doing?

I’ve had a few careers in the past, including working in optics, retail, office management, and working as an RECE. I would probably have gone back to working with children in some capacity or working as a Lactation Consultant.

What advice would you give to a client at the start of their birth journey?

To register for a quality childbirth education class. Feeling informed about your options is so important to feel confident going into the experience. You just don’t know what you don’t know!

What’s your go-to snack?

Popcorn. I love it!

If humans started a colony on Mars, would you go live there?

No, I love the seasons in Canada and would miss them.

What pregnancy or birth related book do you always recommend to people?

Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth

What’s a hobby you have that people might not know about?

I have a cricut and love putting heat transfer vinyl on clothes.

What would you sing at Karaoke night?

Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey

Is there a memory with a doula client from the last year that has really stuck with you?

There’s usually something special about each client that sticks with me. Recently, I was able to support a client with lactation in away that clicked differently then their care staff had explained. Helping them reach their feeding goals felt really good.

What’s the last TV show you binged?

I’m rewatching Criminal Minds.

What are your goals for your birth career in the next 5 years?

Keep learning and growing. I’m in the process of getting my requirements to become an IBCLC. I love taking trainings every year, learning more, and supporting new doulas to reach their goals.
